Name: Howard Pugh
Job title: operational learning manager
Location: Palestra House
Hi Howard! Please sum up your role in one sentence
My role involves overseeing and coordinating all aspects of operations learning to ensure we meet business requirements, improve safety, and reduce operational risk.
Tell us about your journey to ARL…
Beginning my journey on the railway as a Driver Operator Maintainer in 2002, I was based at Willesden Junction depot. It was an exciting time as part of Silverlink transitioned to London Overground Railway Operations Limited (LOROL). By 2009, I had the opportunity to move to LOROL's NXG depot as a driver, where I spent many fulfilling years in the driving chair while also taking on various training roles.
Although I parted ways with LOROL in 2016, my connection to the London Overground family was always there. So, it was an easy decision when the chance arose for me to return. My journey has seen me stay close to the railway and embrace new opportunities within the London Overground community.
What do you look forward to most working at ARL?
What I look forward to most at ARL is being part of the operations department and contributing to the development and learning of train drivers. With my experience in delivering operational competence and knowledge, I'm excited about the opportunity to help ARL become industry-leading in the rail industry and to see our team's incredible work recognised and celebrated.
In your career so far, what are you most proud of?
I've encountered numerous moments of pride throughout my diverse career, from military service to train driver operations. However, one of my most significant achievements is spearheading the training delivery for over 500 drivers, notably including the successful implementation of in-cab signalling ERTMS training. Adapting our learning approach to adhere to industry best practices while navigating the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic was undoubtedly a highlight of my career—one that I hold dear as a testament to my team's innovation, resilience, and dedication.
Tell us about your most memorable railway trip…
Driving a passenger train for the first time brought a profound sense of responsibility, not just for the train but for the well-being and comfort of every passenger aboard. While immensely rewarding, the role of a train driver demands a high level of concentration to uphold the safety & standards of our railways.
If you could book a ticket to any destination, where would you go?
If I could book a ticket to any destination, I'd choose to ride on the inaugural journey of the Rail Baltica Project. Being on that first train journey through the Baltic region would be an extraordinary experience as someone who travels to Estonia regularly due to my wife's Estonian heritage. It would signify a significant milestone in transportation infrastructure and allow me to explore the stunning landscapes and rich cultures of the Baltic region in a whole new way.
