Name: Michael Maddix

Job title: business assurance and risk manager

Location: Palestra House

Hi Michael! Please sum up your role in one sentence

I am responsible for the internal audits and special investigations on behalf of ARL.

Tell us about your journey to ARL…

Brixton, London, was born to Jamaican parents. Therefore, I spent most of my early years in south London.

In the last ten years, I have travelled to several African and Caribbean countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Jamaica, Barbados, etc.

Married with five grown-up children. I am a qualified accountant with an MSc in Accounts and a PGCE in teaching.

I have 25 years of experience in internal audit, risk and consultancy with various internal audit manager roles in companies such as Balfour Beatty Rail, Abellio, Hays Recruitment, RSPCA, etc.

Previously, I also ran First Fruits Saturday School in South London for 18 years, mainly to get young black boys back on track (and off the streets) with Maths, English, confidence building and music.

Now, all roads lead to ARL…

What do you enjoy about working at ARL?

I enjoy the friendly atmosphere, real people and professionalism of ARL, and that we want to do ‘the right thing’.

There are two Michael Maddix and Michael Maddox. For me, please email Michael.maddix@arrivarl.co.uk

In your career so far, what are you most proud of?

Auditing in Australia, Chile and across Europe, adding value and building a strong rapport with the leaders in those countries.

Lead internal audit manager reviewing the East London Line when it was being built.

Tell us about your most memorable railway trip…

My most memorable train trip must be from Sydney (Australia) to Newcastle (Australia), riding on a double-decker train on the way. Now, that was different.

If you could book a ticket to any destination, where would you go?

A day trip to Venus has to be the destination as one day on Venus is equivalent to 243 Earth days, which is a good use of my annual leave.

However, although I have an African bloodline, I do not believe my body could take the heat (the average temperature is 462 C, so it has to be Egypt where else?
