BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2024
To celebrate Black History Month this year, the ED&I steering group organised three amazing events throughout October!
Starting the month off, service delivery manager, Bentley Brooks and customer host, Walé Agunbiadé set up a DJ booth at Shoreditch High Street station, and colleagues handed out some tasty treats.
Following this event, Hackney Downs station hosted a pop-up gallery celebrating Black pioneers who led inventions and societal changes for the community.
In the last week of October, we concluded the month's festivities with another DJ booth set up at Dalston Junction station. There was also an insightful outdoor exhibition highlighting the rich history and contributions of Caribbean and African communities and the many struggles and challenges they faced in the UK. The exhibition provided a deeper understanding of the struggles for equality, the resilience of individuals, and the profound influence these communities continue to have in shaping the UK today.
"It is a time to celebrate Black people, to understand and to be aware of our contributions. We get to celebrate ourselves."
The event at Dalston Junction station was attended by ARL employees and travelling passers-by who stopped to enjoy a thrilling show by music performers from the community; some even joined in to sing and dance.
Errol Mckellar from The Errol Mckellar Foundation also joined us to share the importance of Black men's health and wellness in a moving speech where he shared his story about prostate cancer.
Kudos to the EDI steering group for bringing this year's Black History Month to life and everyone who joined to celebrate the community!
