ELEVATING STANDARDS

In our relentless pursuit of excellence, the Infrastructure Projects & Facilities Management (IPFM) team has been hard at work, making significant strides to enhance our work environment and ensure our colleagues' and passengers' safety and satisfaction. Our journey is driven by a shared commitment to improving staff facilities, boosting morale, and demonstrating our value in every business area.

Last year, we proudly reported the development of new driver mess rooms and the repair of several facilities across the network. These initiatives are more than just infrastructure improvements; they are a testament to our dedication to creating a positive and supportive workplace. Our commitment to excellence is not just a goal but a standard we strive for in every project we undertake, no matter how big or small.

The IPFM team's work extends beyond internal improvements. We aim to ensure ARL provides a safe and satisfactory service for everyone involved. Our customer-facing colleagues play a crucial role in this mission, constantly monitoring and reporting any repairs or innovations needed at our stations to keep passengers and colleagues safe.

In November 2023, Ray McDonagh, one of our vigilant station assistants, noticed a significant safety hazard at South Tottenham. Passengers were sitting on the railings, oblivious to the 20ft drop that posed a severe risk. Thanks to Ray's keen observation, we addressed this issue head-on.

Ray said: "I reported the railing outside the lift on platform 1 for two reasons: passengers were placing their children on the top rail with a 20ft drop below, risking a potential tragedy, and certain individuals were continually throwing rubbish over the railings, which landed close to private property, making the area look filthy and attracting vermin and other animals.

"Since the fencing has been placed on top, approximately three feet higher, passengers cannot put their children on the railing. The amount of rubbish has decreased, and there have been fewer complaints from neighbours."

"The drop from the railings to the ground level was more than 20ft. Passengers, along with children, were sitting on the railings, which could have led to serious injuries if they fell back. By raising the height by 300mm, we've prevented this from happening," explained Kevin Jordan, our FM minor new works manager.

The project to raise the railings' height was completed in late February 2024. Although the design took some extra time to perfect, the result was well worth the effort. Kevin Jordan highlighted the impact of this improvement: "To date, there have been no further reported incidents of the public sitting on the railings, reducing the risk of a fall."

These improvements are a testament to our shared commitment to safety and excellence. It's not just about our work; it's about the care and dedication we bring to every project. Together, we're positively impacting and creating a safer, more enjoyable environment for everyone.
