EUSTON, WE HAVE ACCOMMODATION…
New welfare facilities taking shape as part of HS2 works
Journey times from London are not the only thing set to improve as part of the High Speed 2 project.
As Euston station undergoes major remodelling to accommodate the service, our colleagues’ own accommodation is being relocated and refurbished.
With enabling work well underway to make space for the new HS2 terminus, existing facilities used by the various train operating companies (TOCs), including Arriva Rail London, are being relocated.
“If you imagine Euston as being a giant chess board, each TOC has its own little square,” explains Andy Teesdale, HS2 project interface manager. “But as the HS2 work progresses, the board is slowly losing squares which is why relocation is required.
“The current space is used by London Overground people; drivers, operations and driver managers and union reps. The good news is that we’re moving out of what is quite poor existing accommodation. In parts it is dilapidated, old and noisy.”
Former office space on the opposite side of the station is currently undergoing conversion into a suite of purpose-developed welfare facilities. Each TOC at Euston will have its own space but all within the same area – unlike at present.
“As well as being well away from the noise and vibration of the demolition works, the new space will be refurbished and much more fit for purpose, offering a much nicer working environment,” says Andy.
“We have also been in communication with frontline colleagues over the recent weeks and months to ensure that they have a say about the kind of space they’re getting.”
The new welfare facilities are due to open in the spring,
and later this year there will also be improvements to traincare accommodation located in the basement.
