IN THEIR OWN WORDS: REFLECTIONS FROM THE UNTAPPED TALENT PROGRAMME

The first cohort of the Untapped Talent programme is coming to a close and what a journey it’s been. Created to support frontline colleagues in progressing into more senior roles, the programme focuses on personal growth, skill development, and a deeper understanding of how the wider business operates.

As we prepare to launch the next cohort, we spoke with two participants from the pilot - Dudu Miah, sales assistant and Liam Nixon, customer host - to hear how the experience has shaped their confidence, career ambitions, and their outlook on future opportunities.

Q. What motivated you to apply for the Untapped Talent programme?

DM: It seemed like a good opportunity for self-development. It also offered a chance to assess my existing skills—those I already had, those I’d gained, and those I needed for future career progression.

LN: My motivation was to grow my knowledge and learn new skills. I also wanted to develop personally and professionally.

Q. How has the programme helped you develop new skills or gain insights about yourself?

DM: The course made me realise how many skills I already had and what’s needed to move into management roles. It also gave me a better understanding of how the company operates and how different departments work together.
Before the course, I had never used PowerPoint. By the end, I considered myself an advanced user, having applied my video editing and graphic design skills. I’d never given a formal presentation before either, but the course helped me discover I was actually quite good at it, likely due to public performances in my personal life.
Each module offered something useful, but the biggest takeaway was the importance of effective communication. I also learned that emotional intelligence isn’t as natural to everyone as I used to think.

LN: The programme helped me in many ways—especially with chairing meetings and understanding the correct structure for leading them effectively. It also gave me a better understanding of how to support colleagues who may be facing challenges at work.

Q. In what ways has the programme influenced your perspective on career growth and opportunities?

DM: I now have the belief and confidence to apply for a management position—which I’ve already done. I’m certain that I not only have the skills required for progression, but possibly even more, depending on the role. I also believe I can bring value to the company by progressing in my career.

LN: Taking part in the programme opened my eyes to what I need to do in order to progress. It gave me a clear insight into the steps I can take to move forward. The placement days also helped me gain a better understanding of how different departments function and work together.

Q. Reflecting on your expectations before starting the training, how do they compare to your experience now?

DM: I didn’t have many expectations going in, as I knew it was a pilot and a trial. But now I can honestly say I see ARL moving in a positive direction, and I see the potential this course holds for the right-minded people. My experience has been mostly positive, although there is room for improvement, particularly in providing clearer information for participants.

LN: It’s been a great experience, truly an eye-opener. I’ve learned how to manage and support people more effectively, not just at work but also in my personal life. These are valuable life skills that are important for supporting others, whether they’re colleagues, friends, or family.

Q. What advice would you share with others considering applying to help them prepare and make the most of the programme?

DM: The course is simple and flexible. Don’t rush it. Explore each module, especially the ones that interest you. Take notes throughout, especially during your placements, as you can’t go back to those.
Ask questions - lots of them. That’s what the course is for. Allan, our tutor, was excellent, very helpful and approachable. The same goes for the people I met on placement. Use that to your advantage.
Apply what you learn, like communication and building relationships. Do extra research, it helps you understand and remember better. Practise your presentations. I recorded myself in front of my TV playing the PowerPoint, which helped me improve. If you’re nervous about presenting to senior leaders, email or call them first to break the ice. Once you see the person behind the title, you’ll be fine.

LN: If you’re thinking about applying, take every opportunity that comes your way. Put real effort into your application, and if you’re unsure, speak to someone who’s already been through the course—they can give you a better idea of what to expect and how to get the most out of it.

Dudu and Liam’s stories show that the Untapped Talent programme isn’t just about learning new skills, it’s about discovering what you’re truly capable of. From building confidence to gaining real insight into career progression, the programme gives you the tools, support, and space to grow.
