MEET IGGY – THE NEW RESIDENT OF CRYSTAL PALACE STATION!

There’s a new face at Crystal Palace station – not just any face! A life-size replica of the famous Iguanodon head now greets you in the ticket hall. This fascinating addition was made possible through our collaboration with Friends of Crystal Palace Dinosaurs (FCPD) and the generous donation of the sculpture by a creative food and drink company, Bompas & Parr.

The Iguanodon head, which comes from their 2010 event ‘The Complete History of Food,’ adds a fun touch to the station and will keep an eye on commuters heading to the station or its historic parks. You’ll probably notice it as you pass the Crystal Palace piano cove, which was introduced earlier this year.

Did you know?
Back in 1852, sculptor Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins created life-sized dinosaur models for the famous Crystal Palace park. But in 1853 Hawkins hosted a dinner party inside a giant Iguanodon model. Over 20 guests squeezed in to enjoy a seven-course meal, making for a truly memorable New Year’s Eve!

FCPD is also excited to announce that the Geological Court, home to the iconic extinct animal sculptures, will get a complete conservation makeover over the next year. This is thanks to generous funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the London Borough of Bromley, and the Crystal Palace Park Trust. The historic site will soon be restored and ready to inspire future visitors!

“We hope visitors will have not only their hearts warmed but also their curiosity piqued by how our understanding of the earth and evolution of the living world around us has changed through time.”
Dr Ellinor Michel, Chair of Friends of Crystal Palace Dinosaurs

So next time you’re passing through Crystal Palace station, say hi to Iggy – and take a moment to appreciate the rich history behind this iconic sculpture!
