ON THE MOVE
Moving from Control to Operations has given Tom Green a new perspective on our business

I started as an operations strategy delivery manager in autumn last year. Part of my role is to develop processes to deliver better technology to our drivers, ensure it’s safe and that it fits all our standards and policies. I also oversee the ops learning team. Before this role, I was the control transformation delivery manager. I also worked in planning and as a Network Rail interface manager.
This role gives me a fresh perspective on our business. My previous roles have been alongside operations, but this is my first opportunity to work inside operations. I haven’t come from an operations background, but I’m surrounded by people with that knowledge. It’s incredibly useful and gives me new insight. My experience elsewhere in the company also brings a new perspective to this side of the business.
ARL’s Lift Off to Leadership programme helped me develop my skills. My line managers have also been great at encouraging me and showing me where I could improve. I’ve had a lot of good advice about building my career in the company and looking for new opportunities.
My great-grandfather was a signaller for 45 years. He started in 1908, so there’s a family connection with the railway. It’s an industry I have always wanted to work in. I did a degree in transport business at Loughborough University and worked at First Capital Connect (later GTR), before joining the Overground eight years ago.
You’ll often see me around London on my folding bike! I love cycling. It’s how I travel to the office or our depots. It’s a great way to unwind and keep fit. I once cycled across the Outer Hebrides, and I’d like another cycle challenge this year – London to the south of France is on my list!
