ON THE MOVE
Brushing up her language skills while mopping up our trains has helped Violeta Caloianu progress her career with ARL

I was recently promoted to train presentation supervisor. I wanted to give myself a new challenge and take on more responsibility. I supervise around 20 traincare colleagues on the route between Stratford and Euston. I’m enjoying being out and about a bit more but also the challenge of learning new skills, especially people management and using computers.
Improving my English skills has really helped me. I’m not a native speaker, but I took English lessons when I started with ARL. My managers were very understanding and allowed me to fit the lessons around my shifts. Colleagues have also been great, helping me practise and get more confident. Understanding the language and communicating better is certainly helping me in this new role.
Having confidence in yourself is very important. I’ve always been confident but also enjoy learning new things, and colleagues and managers have always encouraged me. My advice to anyone wanting to build a career at ARL is that support is always available if you ask. There are also opportunities to take on new roles if you want them – especially if you are persistent and willing to challenge yourself.
Before joining ARL, I worked in a central London souvenir shop. When the Covid pandemic came, I lost my job there but took an opportunity to work as an agency cleaner on the London Overground. In 2021, I joined the traincare team permanently.
When I’m not working, I enjoy baking. I make different cakes and brownies. One of my favourites was a cake I made with a London Overground logo. I also like travelling. The best place I’ve been to is Malta, it has a lot of history and the people are very welcoming.
