ON THE MOVE

On secondment as a Network Rail interface manager, Tom Dobson is learning new things about himself as well as the business

I’m only a few weeks into my role and am really enjoying it. I line manage our 11 train running controllers (TRCs), who work alongside Network Rail colleagues at Upminster signalling centre and Three Bridges rail operations centre (ROC). I also act as the liaison between the two companies. I was previously a TRC myself at Upminster.

Our relationship with Network Rail is hugely important. Having ARL colleagues working at their premises means communication is clear and any service issues can be resolved quickly and efficiently.

The opportunity to take this step came after a chat with my line manager. He was moving on and it sounded like a job I’d like to learn more about, so he encouraged me to apply. I’m really enjoying the opportunity to help build a team and understand what they need to perform.

It’s been a great career so far and I wouldn’t change a thing

My first job on the railway was as a signaller. I was working on my own in an old-fashioned signal box at the end of a dirt track in Barnsley! I rather fell into the industry, but that job gave me a fantastic grounding in how the railway works. It’s been a great career so far and I wouldn’t change a thing.

It’s important to make colleagues feel part of a team. I know the value of that from my days in the signal box! It’s especially true for our TRCs who are working on another company’s premises. I need to ensure their voice is being heard and they feel supported.

Running helps me clear my head. I don’t run far but I find it’s the perfect way to unwind after a busy day – there are plenty of those. It refreshes my mind and it helps keep me fit.
