RAILWAY MEMORIAL DAY

Exactly three years after the first national lockdown, the railway family is coming together to hold a Rail Industry Memorial Service at the National Railway Museum in York on Thursday 23 March 2023.

This service gives us a chance to recognise the contribution of railway colleagues, including those at Arriva Rail London, who kept people and goods moving during the national lockdowns.

We will all remember the impact, personal sacrifice, and sad loss within the industry, and hugely appreciate the valuable contribution of our industry during that time.

ARL will be represented by colleagues from around the business  on the day and prior to attending the event, we asked some of them what this event means to them.

“I am proud to be representing all the frontline platform staff that worked hard through COVID and delivered service for our customers. Some fell victim to COVID, and some sacrificed their social and family life to keep the industry moving."
“All gave some, some gave all. Remember them this Memorial Day.” - Khalid Shaikh, station assistant dispatch

Pauline Lawler, customer experience manager added, “As managers on the frontline, we still needed to ensure that not just the passengers were safe and social distancing, but also that the staff at work were looked after and had sufficient PPE, while also maintaining contact with staff at home on furlough who had different worries."

We kept London moving during this difficult time and even though there was a reduction in passengers travelling and a reduction in staff due to furlough, it was a very difficult time for everyone to balance the priorities of our job while ensuring we kept ourselves and our loved ones at home safe."

Having worked right through the pandemic (something that I am proud to have been a part of) I believe that this would be a great opportunity to represent the stations team and share experiences with other TOCs.”

Should you wish to stream the national service live, you will be able to watch it here at 11.30am on Thursday 23 March.
