SPOT, TALK AND ENCOURAGE THIS FESTIVE SEASON
During the autumn and winter months, the colder weather and shorter days can detrimentally impact people’s mental health. The stresses and strains many are facing this year may mean that these feelings are heightened, so it is important to look out for signs indicating people who could be at risk. The railway is an easily accessible environment for individuals who may be looking to cause themselves harm, including children.
Samaritans have launched the Small Talk Saves Lives campaign in partnership with Network Rail, British Transport Police and the wider rail industry. The campaign is aimed at all vulnerable people, regardless of their age, and encourages rail colleagues to trust their instincts: if something does not feel quite right, start a simple conversation with the person.
We can all play our part in identifying and helping vulnerable members of the public. When you are out on the ARL network, please keep an eye out for individuals that display one or more of the following signs:
SPOT:
- The person is standing alone or in an isolated spot
- They look distant, withdrawn or upset
- They might stay on the platform for a long time without boarding any trains that stop
TALK:
- Introduce yourself
- Ask their name
- Ask if they are okay, or if they need help
- Make a comment on the weather
- Ask them where they are going
- Ask if they know where you can get a coffee
- Ask for the time
If you feel comfortable and it is safe to do so approach the person calmly and slowly. For more advice please visit: https://www.samaritans.org/support-us/campaign/small-talk-saves-lives/how-to-start-a-conversation/
ENCOURAGE:
- Listen to what they have to say and repeat it back, to make them feel listened to and understood
- Encourage them to sit down somewhere safe and quiet
- Ask the person if there’s someone you can call for them
- You could mention sources of help, including Samaritans and their GP, as well as friends and family
