STAYING ON TRACK WITH CHANTEL CHANG
Ever wondered how our train drivers stay focused while driving for hours? Hear from Chantel Chang, who drives on the Mildmay and Suffragette lines, on how she stays on top of her game throughout her shifts.
Q: Why does your job require such focus?
CC: As a train driver, staying focused is crucial for safety and efficiency. There are times when I’m juggling multiple tasks, especially during busy or disrupted periods. Concentration can dip during quieter shifts, but we’re trained to use personal protective strategies to stay alert and aware.
Q: What happens if you lose focus?
CC: A moment of distraction can have serious consequences, from damaging infrastructure to causing serious harm. The idea of those outcomes always keeps me motivated to stay focused and responsible for what’s happening in the moment.
Q: Have you always been good at focusing?
CC: I’ve always been pretty good at focusing on tasks. When I was younger, I was the type who enjoyed studying for exams and getting coursework done. But working on the railway has made me adapt my focus skills – now, it’s not just about finishing one thing at a time. I’m constantly shifting my focus, refocusing, and making sure I stay on top of everything, especially during my shifts.
Q: Any tips of improving focus?
CC: My advice? Focus is a skill you should try to develop in all areas of life:
Outside of work... maintaining a healthy lifestyle with balanced meals, regular exercise, and mental breaks like meditation can help a lot.
At work... arriving early to mentally prepare, staying hydrated, and keeping the workspace organised and clean. Small things like separating work from personal life and situational awareness go a long way.
